What is QUM ? Quality Use of Medicines
The QUM program promotes (judicious, safe, effective) and cost-effective prescribing to GPs. It is supported by the National Prescribing Service NPS who provide education, prescribing information which is unbiased and evidence based.
This service is offered to GPs and facilitated by AWRGPN' staff trained by the National Prescribing Service. The Network has established a Professional Advisory Group (GPs and a pharmacist) to assist in the planning of the program.
What is QPI ? Quality Prescribing Initiative
The QPI is a targeted incentive which is part of PIP (Practice Incentive Program). The QPI rewards practices whose GPs complete a range of activities which are recognised or provided by the NPS. Recognised activities include:
- Clinical Audit
- Case Studies
- Educational (Practice) Visits
What is HMR ? Home Medication Review
GPs are required to refer a patient for a HMR to an accredited Pharmacist. The AWRGPN has resources available to fully assist the GP to understand the review process and guidance to how the RMMR (Residential Medication Management Review) works. A Clinic visit can be arranged.
The Home Medicine Review can become an integral part of the GPs approach to preventative medicine.
The Pharmacist will assess:
- the patients capability to administer, integrate and assimilate the various medications they are taking
- any potential drug-drug and drug-food interactions
- any side-effects from the consumption and interaction of any 'non prescribed' medications
As part of the patient interview phase the Pharmacist will:
- check compliance
- check for the correct storage of medicines
- remove out of date and surplus stock of medications
- check the correct usage of any patient medication delivery devices
