The Border GP Division Pty Ltd was established on 1 December 1993 and incorporated on 6 April 1994. On 1 July 2004 a new company was formed and named Border Division of General Practice Ltd. In 2008 the trading name of the Albury Wodonga Regional GP Network was added. The organisation is governed by a Board which is made up of nine members including three Directors who are not General Practitioners.
The Albury Wodonga Regional GP Network forms part of the Australian General Practice Network which was formed in 1998 following the Commonwealth Government General Practice Strategy Review. The AGPN is the peak national body representing 110 General Practice networks and eight state based organisations around the country. The Network has a membership of approximately 90 percent of General Practitioners (GPs) at the local level. The Network is primarily funded by the Department of Health & Ageing to deliver local health solutions through general practice.
The Albury Wodonga Regional GP Network services a population of almost 108,000 people and covers an area of approximately 12,168 square kilometres. The major towns in the area are Albury, Wodonga, Corowa, Culcairn, Holbrook, Howlong, Jindera, Urana and Walla Walla. The main centre of Albury and Wodonga lies 300 kilometres North of Melbourne and 600 kilometres South of Sydney.
The region is currently serviced by 26 practices with 98 GPs inlcuding 14 Registrars.
The key purpose of the Albury Wodonga Regional GP Network is to support general practice to provide services to the community within the context of a broader primary health care system by:
- increasing the effectiveness of primary health care services
- providing support to general practice
- monitoring and responding to local health care needs.
